Backup Power for Ohio Distribution Warehouse before Winter Storm

In the days leading up to a major winter storm, a large distribution center in western Ohio took proactive steps to protect operations. With the risk of snow, ice, and subzero temperatures threatening utility power, the facility contacted Garrett McKenzie to supply large scale backup power in advance of the storm.

The Situation

A winter storm was forecast to impact much of the Midwestern United States, bringing snow, ice, and extreme cold. At the same time, a distribution warehouse in Ohio prepared for the possibility of utility power disruption.

To avoid downtime during the storm, the facility decided to secure temporary backup power that could support operations if an outage occurred. Garrett McKenzie was contacted to provide a solution capable of delivering high capacity power on short notice.

The Response

Garrett McKenzie worked closely with the distribution center and its electrical contractor to determine power requirements, generator placement, and connection points throughout the facility.

Based on load calculations and site conditions, a plan was developed to deploy two generators with a combined capacity of 1.3 MW. Delivery was scheduled for the following day, less than twenty four hours after the initial call.

The Execution

A semi hauler transported the 1 Meg generator to the site, while a service truck towed the 300 kW generator along with power distribution cable.

Upon arrival, both generators were staged in the agreed locations and more than 3,600 feet of power cable was routed to the building breakers.
Electricians on site completed the final connections. The backup power system was fully installed and ready prior to the storm’s arrival.

The Result

With less than a day before the winter storm reached the area, the distribution facility had on site backup power available. Although the generators were not ultimately needed during the storm, they remained in place as a precaution and provided peace of mind for the facility’s operations team.

The project demonstrated the value of proactive planning and rapid deployment of temporary power ahead of severe weather events.
