When a local high school scheduled a planned power outage to upgrade electrical equipment, the electrical contractor needed a way to keep the building operational. The Situation
A high school in Illinois scheduled a planned outage to complete upgrades to its electrical infrastructure. The work required the building’s primary power supply to be shut down for one to two days. Because classes, staff operations, and daily school functions needed to continue, temporary power was required to support the facility throughout the outage.
The electrical contractor overseeing the work reached out to Garrett McKenzie to supply generator power capable of supporting the full electrical load of the school.
The Response
Garrett McKenzie worked closely with the electrical contractor to evaluate power requirements and distribution needs. Generator sizing, placement locations, cable routing, and total cable footage were planned in advance. The delivery schedule and setup time were coordinated carefully so the temporary power system could be installed without disrupting the school day.
The Execution
On the morning of the planned outage, two generators, power distribution cable, and supporting equipment were delivered to the site. Each generator was positioned in a separate area outside the building, and more than 1,700 feet of power cable was run indoors to the main breaker.
Setup was completed within hours, and the temporary power system was fully operational before the outage began. The school remained powered while the electrical upgrades and testing were completed the same day.
The Result
After the generators were connected to the school’s breaker, the planned outage took place without interruption to classes or daily operations. Students, faculty, and staff followed a normal school schedule throughout the work.
Once the upgrades were finished, all rental equipment was removed the following day. The project was completed without issues, demonstrating the value of planned temporary power for critical facilities.
