Dehumidifier, Power & Fuel Cell During Water Tank Maintenance in Illinois
During maintenance on an underground municipal water tank in Mt. Prospect, Illinois, the painting contractor needed to maintain stable humidity levels to protect steel surfaces during blasting and coating. The contractor turned to Garrett McKenzie for a dehumidifier rental, temporary power, and fuel support to keep surface conditions within range throughout the project.
The Situation
As part of a scheduled maintenance project, the municipal water district needed the interior steel surfaces of the underground tank cleaned, blasted, and coated. Any swings in humidity could have caused flash rusting, coating failures, or costly rework.
To maintain controlled interior conditions during the blasting and coating phase, the contractor required:
-
Continuous humidity control
-
A dedicated temporary power source
-
Fuel capacity to support multi-week operation
The Response
The contractor provided tank dimensions and site layout details. Garrett McKenzie sized and delivered a 2,250 CFM desiccant dehumidifier to maintain steel surface conditions during blasting and coating.
A 56 kW generator was paired with a 500-gallon fuel cube to ensure continuous operation with minimal refueling disruptions in the quiet residential area.
The Execution
Due to the tight delivery area, a crane truck was used to stage the equipment on site. The generator was positioned first, followed by craning the dehumidifier into place.
From there, the GM team:
-
Ran flex ducting into the underground tank access point
-
Installed spill containment under the generator
-
Connected power cables & accessories
-
Commissioned the system and verified performance
The entire setup was operational shortly after arrival.
The Result
The system ran nearly 24 hours a day for 4 weeks, maintaining required humidity levels throughout blasting and coating.
This prevented flash rusting, preserved coating adhesion, and kept the project on schedule with no delays.
Outcome: Reliable humidity control + uninterrupted operation = successful tank lining project completed on time.
